Obama, Jackson, Tasers and Brett Favre?
It has been a while since I last posted, so I thought I would just comment on a few things that I missed out on while doing what I do…
On the Whole Jesse Jackson Dissing of Obama: I can’t really say that I was surprised by all of this. Anyone who thinks that a Reverend is a saint is completely mistaken. So he used the “N-word” and doesn’t like Obama’s stances on some of the issues. Believe me, he is not the only black person out their who shares that sentiment and uses that word. That said, Jackson is a fool for saying that on a hot-mic, and you would think a public figure like him knows better than that. It just goes to show you that he is getting old. But the real issue out all of this is that Jackson’s son “rebuked his father’s statements.” Now what the hell does that mean? This country has officially gone soft when people have to start rebuking the genuine thoughts and opinions of someone else. It’s completely pointless no matter how you put it. What does “rebuking” mean? Does that mean that Jesse’s son wants to end his ties with his father? Does it mean that Jesse’s son rebukes his father’s line of thoughts? Will Jesse’s son go out and seek to ruin his father’s career? Or does it just mean what already goes with out saying, which is that Jesse’s son does not agree with what his father said? Come on now? Rebuke? That’s what you say when an evil dictator says he wants you to join hand and hand in genocide.
On the Obama Cover of the New Yorker: I’m of two minds on this, but I’m not a fence sitter necessarily. You see, I approach that whole cover thing from two different perspectives. Under one perspective, if it was me the cover was making fun of, I would be outraged. It can be viewed as very insulting, rude, and a complete misrepresentation of the facts that won’t be explained to the thousands of passerbies who see just the cover. However, coming from the perspective of a person who puts forth a lot of sarcasm in his pieces, I have to say that a cover like this is fair game when it is explained and you understand the context of the picture. There were no racial slurs or direct attacks that can be derived from the New Yorker’s cover, and you can’t come to the conclusion that the illustrator has some type of disdain for Mr. Obama, so in that sense, it is a good piece of satire.
On the Tasering of a Black Youth: Seriously, do we have to really even take this case to trial? A mother wants the police department to pay for having killed her son by overusing a taser on him after arresting him on a cocaine charge. For God’s sake, the boy was already handcuffed and on the ground when they started tasering him, so he was clearly no threat to the policeman who ended up killing him. Some things just shouldn’t have to go to trial, bur as we all know, when you’re charging the police with something, the government needs time to find a way out for the guilty policeman.
Brett Favre on Fox News: Seriously? Have we as a nation gone too far with sports? Maybe I’m at fault too, but sports have clearly taken off to a new level when so much of it is becoming mainstream news. Why on Earth was Brett Favre featured on Fox News in what seemed to be a 77-part piece on why he wants to come back to the NFL? I understand he is a national icon, but is coverage of his “possible” comeback really more deserving of the national spotlight than people dying in Darfur, the War in Iraq or the unspeakable dismissal of human rights in China? I would hope not. And yet here we have Fox News featuring Favre on one of their premiere evening news programs like they just got an interview with the Prime Minister of Russia. Let’s get it together folks. I make my bread in butter in sports, but that’s only because I couldn’t possibly see myself spending my time on this Earth taking this world seriously 24 hours a day. Especially if it’s a world where Favre’s decision to return to the NFL is breaking news on Fox…and you too CNN!

Very good points. I beleive that we should respect other’s opinions, whether or not we agree with them. To publicly ‘rebuke’ something someone said, is disrespectful to that person.
On the cover; politicians have been taking crap for years. If I’ve learned anything it’s that they can usually recover pretty well. All is fair in mainstream media, I suppose.
On The Tasering: It seems as if policeman in America have gotten into the taze-craze(Ha!) . Probably because they keep getting away with it (such as in this case). Murder is murder, and self-defense is self-defense but when someone is hand-cuffed and you’re still pummeling them, then it’s not self-defense anymore now is it?
Sports in the news: This might be a bit biased, considering the most sport watching I ever do is the super bowl once in a while. I definitely think that it’s a bit ridiculous to be reporting on that kind of stuff so much. I wouldn’t really know either way, I don’t watch mainstream American news anymore because it’s either about sports or celebrities(Ack! I don’t care so hard!). Usually I’ll check out BBC News or something.
Great post!
Thanks for the comment. I certainly need to follow your lead and start following BBC News or something of that sort. Right now I’m getting by on print journalism, which tends to be a little more outwardly perspective, but even that is starting to wain in its credibility.
