A Black Commissioner, Now That’s Change We Can Believe In!

November 12, 2008 · No Comments

When citizens across the nation decided to go into a voting booth and vote for Barack Obama to run their country, their efforts resulted in America electing its first black President. The very notion of this historic occurrence is mind-boggling to most Americans, yet for sports fans, this is nothing new, for sports is a very progressive segment in American culture. Yet even despite its progressive nature, professional sports has still yet to have selected a black commissioner to run one of its four major sports. Read More….

Economists vs. Politicians…Who Do You Trust?

August 18, 2008 · No Comments

I’m no economist, although perhaps I should be.

You see, I’m pretty good with numbers. I went through math as fast you could in Austin, Texas, and my college classes were a breeze. However, I didn’t go past the requirements of the core curriculum. I figured that my knack for math and my already high accomplishments put me in a place where I wouldn’t have to take another math class for my interests in life. Plus, I don’t have the patience to look at one more imaginary number or gaze at one more measured theorem.

That said, I would gladly devote the rest of my life to the study of mathematics if just one of the candidates running for President of the United States would look at the economy with a mathematician’s point of view, instead of that of a bunch of political “experts” who got us into this mess in the first place.

TheSportsWatchers.com: Michael Vick - Abused Then Got Abused

August 18, 2008 · No Comments

I have to pay homage to my man Lester Munson of ESPN.com, because the battery of words that I’m about to offer up on Michael Vick and his cast of characters is all owed to Munson’s research in an article he wrote on August 15, 2008.

I don’t want to put words into the famous mouth of Stephen A. Smith, but in describing Michael Vick during the whole dog-fighting situation, Stephen A. called him something to the effect of “The dumbest math student ever.” His point being that Vick risked his multi-million dollar life to fund a dog fighting kennel that at most, brought in thousands of dollars for him, if it made a substantial profit at all.

I certainly don’t disagree with that. Read More……

The Blackonomy: “I’m Causing Racism…?”

August 18, 2008 · No Comments

I’m sorry to have to say this, but the truth is that when it comes to race, there are far too many people out there speaking who don’t need to be.

I’m not talking about the famous people, like the activists and politicians. Heck, their positions and demonstrated dedication alone at least give them the right to give their views on race, an issue that has been, and continues to be, prevalent in this country.

Instead, I’m talking about you! The readers, the commentators, and the callers. Actually, most of you who are reading this, on Blackonomy.com, probably aren’t the people I’m talking about, but for those of you who are familiar with one medium or another that allows its constituency to voice their thoughts, knows what I’m talking about. I’m Not Suprised He’s a Cheater

August 12, 2008 · No Comments

What are we to think of Senator John Edwards and his admitted affair with another woman dating back to December 2006?

Are we really all that surprised? Especially after the whole Governor Eliot Spitzer incident where he was found to have had sexual relations with prostitutes.

The fact is, this is just another example of a powerful man being a powerful man. And I don’t mean to generalize or disrespect all powerful men out there, because I too aspire to be a very powerful individual myself. However, there is no denying that with great power comes the fantastic ability to do whatever you want. And here you had a good looking guy in John Edwards who figured he could wet his whistle with a sexy, younger, artistic woman, and so he did it.

Men like sex…duh! Keep reading →

The Blackonomy: “Where Are All of the Black Sitcoms?”

August 12, 2008 · 1 Comment

The passing of two legends over the weekend has many people in the entertainment industry reeling this week.

Both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes died over the weekend. Bernie was 50 years of age, and Isaac was 65. And coincidentally enough, the death of these two entertainment geniuses comes just months after the two shared the movie set of Soul Men, set to release in October.

TheSportsWatchers.com: China To World: “We’re Here”

August 12, 2008 · No Comments

Okay, so I am late on this, but so what. If you want somebody to truly cover the Olympics from an expressive point of view, then that person should have a lot of difficulty tearing themselves away from the Olympic Games just to write a column.

Well, I’m that person. Because while I wanted to heavily discuss the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Saturday morning, I was too busy actually watching the Olympics!

That said, it was a beautiful display of artistry. And look, I am one of those manly men, who loves sports, and scoffs at the fact that a portrait of 6 different colored stripes can be hung in the Guggenheim, but what the Chinese accomplished on August 8, 2008 will go down in infamy. It was that good.

Dummies Got Us Into A Recession

August 5, 2008 · No Comments

Seriously, why are we in a recession?

Not to say I’m not aware of the reasons that have gotten us here. I know the housing crisis spurred the credit crunch, and I am perfectly aware of how the Iraq War is draining money out of the country like nobody’s business.

But if those things are such obvious reasons for being in a recession, then how did we let them happen?

Really, it comes down to dumb decisions. And sure, I could make this a Bush-bashing post, but why do that for the 17th million time?

The Blackonomy: “Should I Use the Word ‘Nigger’…?”

August 5, 2008 · No Comments

I saw Jessie Jackson on CNN’s “Your Money” over the weekend, and despite him being brought on to talk about the mortgage crisis, he was also swift-questioned about the comments he made on a hot-mic about Senator Barack Obama. In being questioned on the subject, he was asked about his use of the word Nigger. And that got me thinking: “Should I continue to use the word ‘Nigger’?”

The Blackonomy: “Black In America”….? Negro, Please!

July 27, 2008 · No Comments

In watching CNN’s “Black In America,” I could not have been more turned off than after watching the first few seconds of the piece itself. Soledad O’Brien, who acted as the correspondent on this 4-hour documentary, started the piece off with a look into the “Rand” family, a black family dating back to the latter days of slavery. In those initial minutes, the documentary explained how the Rand family’s paternal roots originate with a white slave owner, and it showed the first meeting between one of the Rand family’s black members and one of their white members. It was touching, but what on earth did it have to do with being “Black in America?”
